MySQL using unix domain sockets?

From the configuration file, it looks like Pathway Tools is communicating with an RDBMS over a TCP socket. Is it possible to run Pathway Tools with MySQL over a Unix domain socket instead? I would prefer not having to open a TCP socket.

Pathway Tools does not currently support MySQL communication via a Unix domain socket. This is the first time this feature has been requested. I will forward your feature request to the developers for consideration.

Could you provide a reason as to why you wouldn't use the TCP port for mysql? MySQL is used for Pathway Tools PGDB hosting so that it could be shared among multiple editors. If it was a domain socket, it would defeat the purpose of using a mysql PGDB.
