Privacy Policy

SRI International (SRI) is a nonprofit organization that performs research and development activities for a broad range of customers. The Internet site linking to this Privacy Policy (the "Site") is operated and maintained by SRI. SRI is committed to protecting your privacy and providing a safe and rewarding online experience. This Privacy Policy describes SRI's policies and procedures for the collection of personal information by the Site, and our use and dissemination of such information. By visiting the Site, you are accepting the practices described in this Privacy Policy. Information that SRI Collects About You We may collect several types of information from and about the users of our Sites, including:
  • Personally identifiable information, including, but not limited to, your name, company name, postal address, e-mail address, or telephone number (“Personal Information”);
  • Usage information, including, but not limited to, your IP address; the web page you last visited; computer and connection information such as browser type and version, operating system, and platform; your software or database download activity; and the frequency of your visits to our Site (“Usage Information”); and
  • Information provided by you to be published on our Sites (“User Contributions”), including, but not limited to, Q&A entries you post on the Site.

Personal Information will be collected through information that you provide to us, e.g., by filling in forms or otherwise submitting Q&A entries to our Site. This Personal Information may include any information you provide at the time of registering, posting material, downloading software or data, or requesting further information.

Some Usage Information will be automatically collected through the use of cookies. A cookie is a small file placed on the hard drive of your computer. You may refuse to accept browser cookies by activating the appropriate setting on your browser. However, if you select this setting you may be unable to access certain parts of our Site. Unless you have adjusted your browser setting so that it will refuse cookies, our system will issue cookies when you direct your browser to our Site. User Contributions are posted on the Site and transmitted to others at your own risk. We cannot control the actions of other users of our Site with whom you may choose to share your User Contributions.

How SRI Uses and Shares Information About You

The following data items are considered private data that won't be shared with other users, business partners, or the public at large (unless you include them in a message that you post on the site):
  • your password
  • your email address
  • your IM address (AIM, Jabber, or other instant messaging address)
  • your phone number
  • your "private messages"
  • your login credentials (username and password) for other services (Twitter, Facebook, etc.)

However, some private data may be published in aggregate, e.g. "60% of our users are registered with Gmail addresses."

Your User Contributions (including files) can be downloaded and re-used by other services, either one-by-one or in bulk as RSS files.

Your profile information (including subscriptions and avatars) can be downloaded and re-used by other services, either scraped from the HTML interface or in bulk as FOAF files.

Your User Contributions will be forwarded to users who subscribe to them, including users on other services.

Your profile information will be sent to web services for users who subscribe to you or to whom you subscribe.

Based on your email preferences, you may receive automated email messages for important system events, such as when others subscribe to your notices.

Based on your email preferences, you may receive an email newsletter. You can opt out of the newsletter if you don't want to receive it.

In urgent situations, administrators may send you email directly to your registered email address, even if you've requested no notices or newsletter.

Notwithstanding anything above, SRI may also disclose your Personal Information, Usage Information, or User Contributions if required to do so by law or in the good-faith belief that such action is necessary to conform to the edicts of the law or to comply with legal process.

How to Opt Out

If you do not want SRI to send you any further correspondence, please: (a) if available, use any opt-out functionality provided for on the Site; or (b) write to us at the address below, telling us the name, address, and email address you used when registering on our Site. We will then remove your information from our lists, and will not contact you again regarding this Site unless you re-register.

Privacy Policy Changes

If we decide to change this Privacy Policy, we will post those changes here so that you will always know what information we gather, how we might use that information, and whether we will disclose it to anyone.
